Turner & Townsend Thinc’s restoration of Brisbane City Hall wins two premier awards

Thinc has been awarded two significant property awards at the 2015 Property Council of Australia’s Innovation and Excellence Awards – Australia’s premier awards for construction excellence – for the Brisbane City Hall Restoration project.

The project won 2015 Queensland Development of the Year Award at the Queensland State awards and 2015 Best Heritage Development in Australia at the national awards.

Brisbane City Hall re-opened in April 2013, following a comprehensive re-design and refurbishment of the building’s public and support spaces.  The project brief, to reform Brisbane City Hall to its former glory and bring the spaces, facilities and infrastructure into alignment with large modern meeting and business spaces, required careful design, planning and execution.

Thinc, together with TKD Architects and GHD, melded conservation, architectural and sustainability practices and utilised the latest technologies and materials to conserve the Hall’s significant spaces and fabric.  The restoration allowed for the incorporation of the Museum of Brisbane and also measures to address energy efficiency and water conservation. The Main Auditorium was fully reworked to improve performance and amenity whilst enhancing architectural qualities.

The seamless integration of the new structure, services and fittings within the original spaces and heritage constraints is a credit to the management, ingenuity and creativity of the whole project team.

The Brisbane City Hall is a restored and vibrant architectural wonder – re-equipped for its role as the focus for Brisbane’s civic, cultural, and community gatherings.  Its reinvigoration shows that heritage can be successfully managed, preserved and enhanced for future generations.

Commenting on the project, Geoff Hardy, now Director of Turner & Townsend Thinc, reflected that: “Both in Queensland and across Australia, we are justly proud of winning these prestigious awards and are very pleased that the restoration of the Brisbane City Hall has been awarded this honour.  I congratulate TKD Architects, whose design, coupled with our project managers’ expertise, sets a new foundation for the ongoing operation of such a wonderful building into the 21st Century”.

Mr Hardy went on to say that:  “As you will know, Thinc has recently been acquired by Turner & Townsend, a global independent professional services company.  As this award demonstrates, I have no doubt that Turner & Townsend Thinc will continue to be involved with the most exciting projects into the future”.

Anooj Oodit, Turner & Townsend’s Managing Director, Australia says “I am delighted that the team’s dedication and expertise has been recognised through these awards. The project management expertise provided is truly world class”
